EUROPEAN DATA PROTECTION DAY
On the 28th of January 2020, we celebrate the European Data Protection Day, marking the 39th anniversary of the signing, in Strasbourg, in 1981, of Convention 108 for the protection of individuals with regard to the automatic processing of personal data – the first legal instrument adopted in the field of data protection.
This Convention opened the way for the regulation at European level of the rules for the processing of personal data, and at present we are in a new phase of the data protection field, as a result of the implementation, from the 25th of May 2018, of the General Data Protection Regulation, which led to the standardisation of the principles of personal data protection in all the Member States of the European Union.
In this context, there was also the modernisation of Convention 108, which took place in May 2018, when the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted the amended Protocol known as “Convention 108+”.
For the celebration of the European Data Protection Day, the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing will organise the Conference entitled “Practical aspects of the application of the General Data Protection Regulation and national incidental regulations” at the Palace of the Parliament, on the 31st of January 2020, starting at 11:00 am.
The participation at the event is based on an invitation within the limits of the available places.
Also, as every year, the informative clip dedicated to the General Data Protection Regulation – a message of public interest, carried out by our institution – is running in this period on the national television TVR and in the means of transportation STB.
The annual informative materials dedicated to the European Data Protection Day (brochure and leaflet) are available at: www.dataprotection.ro/informatii generale/informatii de interes public/materiale informative
