The European Data Protection Day is celebrated on the 28^th of January 2021 by all the Member States of the Council of Europe and marks 40 years since the adoption in 1981 in Strasbourg of Convention 108 for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data.

Convention 108 defines a set of universal principles and contains provisions capable of ensuring the protection of privacy of natural persons in their relations with the public authorities or private entities.

The modernisation of Convention 108 took place in May 2018 when the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted the amended Protocol known as the “Convention 108+”.

The annual celebration of this day is an opportunity to bring to the public’attention the importance of complying with the principles of processing the personal data, the right to privacy and the right to the protection of personal data, enshrined as fundamental rights.

To celebrate the European Data Protection Day, the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing will organise two online events designed to properly inform the controllers about the adequate implementation of the personal data protection rules established by the General Data Protection Regulation.

Thus, on the 27^th of January 2021, our institution will organise online a conference dedicated to the public authorities and institutions entitled “Findings and recommendations for controllers from the public sector”, where practical aspects specific to the implementation of the principles relating to the processing of personal data shall be presented and discussed. For this event, the representatives of central public authorities and institutions, in particular, were invited.

Then, on the 28^th of January 2021, we will organise, online, the second conference dedicated to the European Data Protection Day, with the theme “Findings and recommendations for controllers from the private sector”, with the participation of the most important associations and professional units, chambers of commerce and media representatives.

The celebration on the 28^th of January 2021 of the European Data Protection Day will be held with the support of the national television TVR and of the Bucharest Transport Company which will broadcast the information video dedicated to the General Data Protection Regulation (message of public interest) made by our institution.

At the same time, synthetic information about the activity of the Authority during year 2020 is presented, as every year, in the Brochure dedicated to the European Data Protection Day, available, together with the related leaflet, on www.dataprotection.ro general information / public information / informative documentation.
